Strategy
The museum needed a temporary, low-budget yet high-impact way to connect with the public during its closure. The opportunity came through the major Evert Thielen retrospective at the Limburgs Museum. We proposed a satellite exhibition focused on Thielen’s preparatory work, sketches, studies and notes, offering a behind-the-scenes look at his monumental paintings. The strategy: make big art feel personal, and turn limited space into a focused, intimate experience.
Approach
We designed a complete pop-up exhibition using smart, reusable materials and minimal means. Every detail was crafted to guide visitors smoothly through the space: from the routing and signage to the visual storytelling and period room settings. The result was a stripped-down, immersive experience that drew viewers into Thielen’s world. Even in a modest setup, the work felt monumental. Everything, from the typography to the wall texts, was tuned to echo the quiet intensity of his sketches.
Result
The pop-up kept Museum van Bommel van Dam front-of-mind during its hiatus and strengthened its bond with the local community. It drew art lovers into the heart of Venlo and provided a thoughtful counterpoint to the large-scale exhibition nearby. The modular elements were later reused in other settings, adding value beyond the project. With a modest budget and smart design, the museum stayed active, visible and relevant, even without a home.
