Strategy
To reconnect the city with its journalistic roots, we transformed the former newspaper headquarters into Tante Bet, a place where history, news, and community come together. A new pedestrian passageway, created as part of the renovation, serves as the stage for a unique public experience with digital newspapers displayed on touchscreens and a timeline wall that traces the evolution of journalism in Limburg.
Approach
In collaboration with the city archive, we curated a visual and interactive journey through time. Three digital touchscreens placed in the new passageway allow passersby to scroll through both current headlines and historic stories. This modern tribute to an old tradition, where printed newspapers once hung outside for public reading, makes the news accessible and engaging once again.
The wall features a striking visual timeline of regional journalism with key moments, iconic headlines, and front pages from different decades. Designed to spark curiosity and reflection, the wall reveals how local media shaped and was shaped by the community it served.
To add depth and texture, the backdrop consists of layered newspaper pages from different eras, creating the impression of a press in motion. It is a subtle but dynamic visual cue to the craft of newspaper-making and the enduring impact of print.
Result
Tante Bet is more than a building. It is a living archive. The passageway becomes a space for learning, reflection, and connection, echoing the spirit of the city’s news heritage while offering a fresh digital twist. By linking historical storytelling with modern design, the project celebrates the past while staying rooted in the present.
